COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will offer assistance to students whose college plans were interrupted by Hurricane Katrina.
Steve Ellis, director, Admissions and Records, said streamlined admissions processes will be available to students whose college plans were disrupted by the storm. The decision to offer special accommodations was made following several phone inquiries about UCCS transfer policies from family and friends of students.
“We will do everything in our power to assist these students in meeting their educational goals,” Ellis said. “Each request will be personally reviewed and every effort made to accommodate that student’s needs.”
The UCCS Office of Admissions and Records will also contact area high school counselors to advise them of the university’s desire to assist affected students.
Additionally, a limited number of rooms in on-campus housing are available.
Fall semester classes began Aug. 22. Registration will remain open until Sept. 8. Students interested in attending UCCS should contact the university as soon as possible by calling (719) 262-3383 or (800) 990-8227, ext. 3383.
In other Hurricane Katrina efforts, UCCS students who are part of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class, worked in coordination with a local radio station to raise funds and supplies to aid storm victims. UCCS staff members are also planning assistance efforts. When available, those plans will be announced.
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,800 students annually.
