CU President Hank Brown Visits Pueblo

Brown takes steps to increase access to CU for Pueblo Students.

BOULDER University of Colorado System President Hank Brown will visit Pueblo Thursday, August 25 and Friday, August 26th. Chancellor Pamela Shockley-Zalabak of University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will join him for visits with local officials, business, and education leaders.

President Brown will host a CU at the State Fair Community Dinner in conjunction with the 3rd annual auction Pueblo Community Scholarship Fundraiser. Pueblo City Councilman Ray Aguilera has coordinated a silent auction to raise funds for University of Colorado bound Pueblo students.

Last year, the community raised $13,500, and the University of Colorado President’s Community Scholarship Fund matched the donations for a total of $27,000 in scholarship monies for low income students attending CU campuses.

The scholarship program aims to increase the number of Pueblo students with high financial need at all CU campuses.

This year the community is planning to raise $20,000 at the annual silent auction on Thursday, August 25 from 5:30-9pm at the Union Depot in Pueblo. Auction items will include a small motorcycle, fine wines from the cellars of Aldo Battiste, a pool table, southwesten furniture, a trip to New York City, a trip to the Paris Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and a Ned Posa painting.

University of Colorado President Hank Brown has pledged to match the community proceeds from the CU President’s Community Scholarship Fund.

The University of Colorado System works in a collaborative effort with community leaders, the Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation, and K-12 administrators to increase participation of low income, diverse, and academically qualified students from Pueblo at CU campuses.

University of Colorado Alumni Director Kent Zimmerman, Chancellor Shockley-Zalabak, City Councilman Ray Aguilera, and Senator Tapia will share their remarks at the State Fair Community Dinner. President Brown will conclude remarks, and the live auction will begin.

President Brown continues his visit on Friday, August 26. He will meet with local Hispanic leaders to discuss his goals concerning diversity and access at CU. Later, he’ll tour Pueblo Community College, and meet with President Mike Davis.

The University of Colorado is a three-campus system with campuses in Boulder, Colorado Springs, and a Denver and Health Science Center campus located in Denver and at the former Fitzsimons Army Base in Aurora.
