COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. More than 500 members of a 1,000-student University of Colorado at Colorado Springs freshman class will have high-level move-in help when they come to campus Wednesday.
CU President Hank Brown, as well as UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak, Vice Chancellor for Student Success Jim Henderson and other top campus administrators, will welcome students moving into campus housing beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the UCCS Summit Village.
“It is important that students have a positive start to the semester,” Shockley-Zalabak said. “I can think of no better way to start the year than having representatives of the university here to welcome students and their families, to answer their questions, and to help unload the family van.”
Wednesday is the first day freshman students are eligible to move to campus housing. Housing officials anticipate most early movers will be first-year students anxious to begin their college careers or participating in Freshman Seminar, a popular program that introduces new students to the university and greater Colorado Springs community. Freshman Seminar courses begin Thursday. Regular classes begin Aug. 21.
At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, freshman and their parents will be welcomed to the campus at a barbeque at the University Center. The dinner will feature comments by Shockley-Zalabak and introductions of campus officials.
While official figures will not be available until mid-September, enrollment of first-year UCCS students is expected to be strong. The UCCS freshman class is expected to be more than 1,000 students and will be among the best-qualified class in university history. Almost half of the class earned 3.5 or better high school grade point averages and 43 students earned 4.0 or better high school grade point averages, according to Henderson.
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
