COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. A new program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will allow individuals easier access to courses designed to improve specific business skills.
Offered through the UCCS College of Business and Administration, the campus business certificate program will allow individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree to enroll in master’s-level courses in areas ranging from general business administration to specific topics such as accounting, international business, operations, marketing, technology management, and finance.
Students will have the opportunity to take one class or to complete five courses to earn a certificate in one of ten specific areas. If a student decides to continue after earning a certificate, courses will count toward requirements for a master’s degree in business administration.
“This program is designed for the person who seeks to improve his or her skills in a certain area or who wants to start work on either a graduate certificate or, eventually, a graduate degree in business almost immediately,” Amy De Lourenco, program director, said.
The classes are the same high-quality master’s-level courses where full- and part-time MBA-students currently enroll. Classes are generally offered in the late afternoon or evenings on the UCCS campus in northeast Colorado Springs. Enrollment for the certificate program began Nov. 15 for the spring semester that begins Jan. 17.
“The college is working to meet the needs of all types of students,” De Lourenco said.
Previously, students interested in graduate business courses were required to be admitted to the graduate MBA program. Several steps, including submission of scores from a national standardized test, were required before enrollment. Now, by applying for the certificate program, a student can begin coursework almost immediately.

The College of Business was established with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 1965 and serves the needs of the Pikes Peak region and southern Colorado for competent and responsible managers, for continued education of those already in such positions, and for research. It also serves the needs for business education throughout the world with its distance MBA program. This fall, about 800 undergraduate and 275 graduate students enrolled in the college. Both undergraduate and graduate business degree programs are fully accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,800 students annually.
