COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — A record number of first-time freshmen students will lead CU-Colorado Springs to its highest-ever enrollment, university officials predicted as classes began.
A total of 954 first-time freshmen enrolled for the fall semester, a 4.5 percent increase from the 911 freshmen who enrolled last fall and a 55 percent increase from the 425 freshmen who enrolled in 1995.
“This increase recognizes that CU-Colorado Springs is the university of choice among many students in Colorado,” Jim Henderson, vice chancellor, Student Success, said. “While this is a record, we continue to have space for highly motivated students interested in continuing their education.”
In addition to being the largest class, Henderson believes this year’s freshmen are the best qualified in the university’s history based upon measures such as high school grade point averages, class rank, and entrance exam scores.Fall semester classes began Aug. 23. Official enrollment will be taken Sept. 9, twelve days after the beginning of classes. While university officials are optimistic that total enrollment will surpass last year’s record-breaking total enrollment of 7,620, official figures will not be available until then.
To be admitted, recent high school graduates must submit ACT or SAT test scores, an official high school transcript and complete an application available on-line at www.uccs.edu. Students must also pay an application processing fee. For more information, students may call 262-3383. Transfer students, with more than 12 hours of transferable college credit from a regionally accredited college or university and a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, can usually transfer to the university on an assured admission basis.
High school graduates more than 20 years of age by Sept. 9, or individuals who have an undergraduate degree and are interested in beginning course work toward a master’s degree, may apply and register until Sept. 9. These students may take classes this fall while completing application materials for future terms.
