COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO — More than 200 students at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs were inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honor society during formal ceremonies March 30.
The students are charter members of a new Alpha Lamda Delta chapter at CU-Colorado Springs. Alpha Lamda Delta is an 80-year-old national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year students. There are 230 chapters nationwide, and the organization offers $100,000 in scholarships to its members. The local chapter was organized by a student group led by Philip Willburn, Buena Vista senior in Communication, and three-year student coordinator for Freshman Seminar.
The ceremony was held at the local Wyndham Hotel. Glenda Earwood-Smith, national executive director of Alpha Lamda Delta, inducted the new members into the honor society. Earwood-Smith traveled from the organization’s headquarters in Macon, Ga., for the event. From CU-Colorado Springs, Jim Henderson, vice chancellor, Student Success, and administrative advisor for the local chapter, and Constance Staley, professor, Communication, and director of the Freshman Seminar program, assisted with the induction. Staley is the ALD faculty advisor. Nearly 600 students and guests attended the event.
Membership in Alpha Lamda Delta is open to full-time freshmen (and sophomores for charter membership purposes) who earn a 3.5 or better GPA. The society emphasizes that educated persons have a responsibility to have tolerance in dealings with all persons, generosity in giving to those in need and insight into the feelings of others. Members are challenged to make meaningful contributions to society and, through local chapters, to engage in campus and community service projects.
