COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will host the Colorado Science Olympiad Southern Regional Tournament from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 3, organizers recently announced.
More than 1,000 middle and high school students, coaches, parents, teachers, and community volunteers are expected to attend.
The tournament, held in connection with Science Olympiad Tournaments across the U.S. and Canada, is an academic interscholastic competition designed to bolster student interest in science and engineering. The winners of the southern regional tournament will compete at the Colorado state tournament April 21 at Colorado School of Mines, Golden. State winners will represent Colorado at the National Science Olympiad in May at Wichita (Kan.) State University.
Twenty-eight middle school and 32 high school teams will compete in 46 individual and team events in this year’s regional tournament at UCCS. The events are supervised by volunteers from UCCS, the United States Air Force Academy, local industries and the greater Colorado Springs community. This year’s events include Boomilever, Designer Genes, Food Science, Oceanography, Disease Detectives and Science Crime Busters.
At an awards ceremony following the competition, medals will be presented to all first, second and third place winners. First through fifth place teams and coaches will receive trophies.

In 2006, a team from Eagleview Middle School, Colorado Springs, represented Colorado at the national tournament. UCCS hosted the national tournament in May 2001 and has hosted the regional tournament annually since 1993.
