CU-COLORADO SPRINGS NAMES NEW DEAN OF ENGINEERING <\/font><\/h1>\n

A <\/p>\n

13-year veteran of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is <\/p>\n

the new dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, university <\/p>\n

officials announced today, May 22.<\/font><\/p>\n

Jeremy Haefner, <\/p>\n

a member of the Math Department faculty since 1989, was selected following <\/p>\n

a national search. Haefner will replace John Trapp, who has served as <\/p>\n

interim dean since September. Trapp succeeded Ron Sega who was dean <\/p>\n

from 1996 to 2001, leaving to accept a position in the Department of <\/p>\n

Defense. Trapp will return to his previous position as an engineering <\/p>\n

professor at the University of Colorado, Denver.<\/font><\/p>\n

Pending approval <\/p>\n

by the Colorado Board of Regents, Haefner will begin his duties this <\/p>\n

summer.<\/font><\/p>\n

"Jeremy Haefner <\/p>\n

has demonstrated exceptional abilities to lead the university in new <\/p>\n

directions," Chancellor Pam Shockley said. "I believe his <\/p>\n

knowledge of the campus, as well as its potential, will be of great <\/p>\n

benefit."<\/font><\/p>\n

Haefner currently <\/p>\n

serves as senior faculty associate for information technology and also <\/p>\n

directs the Teaching and Learning Center which assists university professors <\/p>\n

to incorporate technology use into the classroom. Previously, Haefner <\/p>\n

served as chair of the Department of Mathematics.<\/font><\/p>\n

"I am quite <\/p>\n

honored to have been selected as dean of the College of Engineering <\/p>\n

and Applied Science through a rigorous and thorough search process," <\/p>\n

Haefner said. I look forward to working with my colleagues to take the <\/p>\n

college to a new level by embracing values of collaboration, innovation <\/p>\n

and excellence."<\/font><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Haefner earned CU <\/p>\n

System honors for his use of technology in teaching and was instrumental <\/p>\n

in efforts to develop math on-line, a program that allows high school <\/p>\n

students from across the state to take advanced math courses over the <\/p>\n

Internet. He also helped develop an on-line math tutoring program used <\/p>\n

by students at the university. In 2002, he was named an Educause Fellow <\/p>\n

with the National Learning Infrastructure Initiative.<\/font><\/p>\n

Haefner’s research <\/p>\n

into integral representation theory has been funded by the National <\/p>\n

Security Agency. Other federal funding came from the National Science <\/p>\n

Foundation. Haefner earned master’s and Ph.D in mathematics from the <\/p>\n

University of Wisconsin and bachelor’s from the University of Iowa, <\/p>\n

Iowa City. Haefner began as an assistant professor of mathematics, was <\/p>\n

promoted to associate professor in 1993 and to professor in 1998.<\/font><\/p>\n

The College of Engineering <\/p>\n

and Applied Science offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. <\/p>\n

Students may choose from 13 fields of study including mathematics, aerospace <\/p>\n

engineering, computer science, and both electrical and mechanical engineering. <\/p>\n

In fall 2001, 956 students were enrolled in the programs.<\/font><\/p>\n

CU-Colorado Springs, <\/p>\n

located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs is the <\/p>\n

fastest growing university in Colorado, offering 25 bachelor’s degrees, <\/p>\n

17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The university consists of the <\/p>\n

colleges of Letters, Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing, <\/p>\n

Education and the Graduate School of Public Affairs.<\/font><\/p>\n
