The first class of southern Colorado students from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to earn Kane Family scholarships will graduate May 21 as part of the university\u2019s thirty-sixth and largest commencement exercises.<\/p>\n
Eight members of the initial Kane Family Scholars group will participate in commencement ceremonies scheduled for 11 a.m. May 21 at the World Arena. Students and families will also be honored at a luncheon May 20 with Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and trustees of the Kane Family Foundation. The trustees announced the merit-based scholarship, one of the most generous in Colorado, in Jan. 2006 and awarded the scholarships that cover each student\u2019s books, tuition and fees for four years for the fall 2006 semester.<\/p>\n
Initially for students at UCCS and Pikes Peak Community College, the program now includes students at Colorado State University-Pueblo, Pueblo Community College, Trinidad State Junior College, Otero Junior College and Lamar Community College. More than 120 students now participate in the program which is administered by American National Bank with assistance from the UCCS Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an outstanding group of young people,\u201d Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. \u201cAnyone who has doubts about the future of our region need only meet these students. They have high aspirations for themselves and for those around them. When I look at them, I know the future is bright.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shockley-Zalabak will host the students, their family members, and Kane Family Foundation trustees Bill Corrigan, Tad Goodenbour, Louis Johnson, and Greg Johnson at the University Center on the UCCS campus beginning at 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n
Students who will be honored include:<\/p>\n
Emily Albrecht, La Junta. Albrecht will earn a Bachelor of Science in Biology with the Latin honor magna cum laude (high distinction). She was an honor student at La Junta High School.<\/p>\n
Laura Bazemore, Colorado Springs. Bazemore will earn a Bachelor of Arts in English with the Latin honor cum laude (distinction). She was an honor student at Doherty High School, Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
Tiffany Epps,Colorado Springs. Epps will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She was an honor student at Liberty High School, Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
Janean Jubic, Pueblo. Jubic will earn a Bachelor of Science in Business and was a member of the UCCS Women\u2019s Basketball team. She was an honor student at Pueblo West High School.<\/p>\n
Jaime Mitchell, Calhan. Mitchell will earn a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Environmental Studies and a certification as an elementary teacher.<\/p>\n
Ashley Whittemore Small, Colorado Springs. Small will earn a Bachelor of Science in Business. She was an honor student at Manitou Springs High School.<\/p>\n
Jill Westhoff, Colorado Springs. Westhoff will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with the Latin honor magna cum laude (high distinction). She was an honor student at Pine Creek High School.<\/p>\n
Adam Saffer, Eads. Saffer graduated in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and with the Latin honor cum laude (distinction). He was an honor student at Eads High School.<\/p>\n
The Kanes were ranchers in Fountain who believed in independence through education. Alexander \u201cAndy\u201d Kane died in 2003. His wife, Wanden Matthews Kane, died in 1991.<\/p>\n
Mr. Kane was born in 1918 on the family homestead east of Fountain. Later, he became a business partner to Wanden Matthews La Farge in the purchase of the South Gore Ranch. They later married and built the Kane Family Ranch headquarters near Williams Creek. The Kanes ranched and raised quarter horses for more than 30 years. Mr. Kane was a member of the Cowboys Turtle Association, the predecessor to the Professional Cowboy Association, and participated in many rodeos.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Kane was born in New York and moved to the Pikes Peak region in 1940. She was a rancher, investor and educator who spoke seven languages, wrote Arabic and Sanskrit, and traveled the world. She was twice elected Fountain\u2019s mayor, was named Soroptimist Citizen of the Year and founded the women\u2019s association for rodeo.<\/p>\n
The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
