{"id":503,"date":"2010-05-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-17T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=503"},"modified":"2010-05-17T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-17T07:00:00","slug":"uccs-student-a-finalist-for-2010-student-academy-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=503","title":{"rendered":"UCCS STUDENT A FINALIST FOR 2010 STUDENT ACADEMY AWARDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students from 21 colleges and universities, including the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, will compete as finalists in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\u2019 37th Annual Student Academy Awards competition.<\/p>\n<p>Academy members will view these films at special screenings and vote to select the winners. Gold, silver and bronze awards, along with accompanying cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, may be presented in each of four categories. The winning filmmakers will go to Los Angeles for a week of industry-related activities and social events that will culminate in a June 12 awards ceremony at the Academy\u2019s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Last Bogatyr,\u201d by UCCS senior Sarah R. Lotfi, is one of nine films selected in the narrative category. The 17-minute film is set in Russia during WWII and told without dialogue. The term bogatyr refers to an epic hero from Russian folklore. The film was produced under the supervision of David Nelson, associate professor, Communication, as part of the university\u2019s production course in spring 2009. Robert von Dassanowsky, professor, Visual and Performing Arts, also assisted with the project.<\/p>\n<p>Lotfi is pursuing degrees in communication and visual and performing arts. She owns and operates White Cloud Films, LLC, and is currently pursuing her first feature \u201cOne Free Film,\u201d for her senior thesis at UCCS before her graduation in spring 2011<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Last Bogatyr,\u2019\u201d has exceeded my hopes,\u201d Lotfi said. \u201cI never anticipated gathering this national attention. I consider this success is something to be shared with my cast, crew, university and the Colorado community. I am sincerely excited how this nomination may encourage current and future film production and inspire larger student filmmaking communities in this state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To reach this stage, students competed in one of three regional competitions. Each region is permitted to send to the Academy up to three finalists in each of the four categories. The Academy established the Student Academy Awards in 1972 to support and encourage excellence in filmmaking at the collegiate level.
