{"id":450,"date":"2009-08-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-25T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=450"},"modified":"2009-08-25T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-25T07:00:00","slug":"uccs-offers-new-certificates-in-homeland-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=450","title":{"rendered":"UCCS OFFERS NEW CERTIFICATES IN HOMELAND SECURITY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Homeland Security, part of the National Institute of Science, Space and Security Centers at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will offer two new certificates in security intelligence and disaster public health to a growing list of educational services in homeland security and homeland defense.<\/p>\n<p>CHS, in partnership with the School of Public Affairs, is offering the certificate in intelligence for graduate students.  The Center, in partnership with the Beth-El School of Nursing is offering the Public Health Certificate for both graduate and undergraduate students.<\/p>\n<p>The Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security Intelligence will be comprised of four courses:  National Security Intelligence; Democracy, Policy, and Security; Counterterrorism Intelligence and Analytical Intelligence Methodologies.<\/p>\n<p>The Certificate in Disaster Public Health is comprised of courses that cover:  general principles of disaster public health, disaster preparedness and emergency response, principles of medical preparedness and response to specific types of disasters.  Also, the courses will explore special public health issues as they apply to disasters to include segments on terrorism and insurgency, and medico-legal disaster response issues.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cEach certificate is comprised of four courses that may be completed within the span of a year,\u201d said Tina Markowski, operations and academic programs manager at the center. \u201cAn academic certificate from UCCS can be a powerful discriminator setting you above the competition when it comes time to land that next job or promotion,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese two new certificates builds on the momentum of the exciting new efforts happening within the Institute to provide educational services in partnership with academic units,\u201d said Mike Perini, NISSSC Executive Director. \u201cThese new educational services will position the Institute for future growth and demonstrates our commitment to meet the needs of our military and private sector partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All CHS programs are taught online and in-residence by experienced, professional faculty.  \u201cThe certificate granting academic units are accredited and these courses may be applied towards concentrations and electives in various graduate and undergraduate degrees offered by UCCS,\u201d said Perini.  \u201cFor example, a graduate certificate in homeland defense may be applied towards a Masters of Public Administration through the School of Public Affairs. Similarly, a graduate certificate in disaster public health may be applied towards a Masters in Health Administration through the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>NISSSC has four Centers.  The Center for Homeland Security, the Center for Space Studies,  the Trauma, Health and Hazards Center and the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education.
