The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak Community College, Lamar Community College, Otero Junior College, Pueblo Community College and Trinidad State Junior College announced recipients of the 2009 Kane Scholarships May 13 in ceremonies on the UCCS campus.<\/p>\n
The merit-based scholarship program, one of the largest in the state, was made possible through the Kane Family Foundation and its benefactors, Wanden and Andy Kane. The Kanes were Fountain ranchers who believed in independence through education. Together for more than 50 years, the couple came from vastly different backgrounds while sharing a love of the Western lifestyle and an appreciation for learning. Together, Andy and Wanden Kane\u2019s vision was to help others. Their foundation allows their vision to continue by helping thousands of Colorado residents achieve the dream of a college education.<\/p>\n
Students receiving the scholarships, family members, representatives from each college or university, and trustees of the Kane Family Foundation attended the ceremonies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe future is in front of me this evening,\u201d Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. \u201cI have no crystal ball but something far more reliable in predicting the future of our region, state and nation. That predictor is you \u2013 young people, your personal supporters, and community leaders who have joined forces to create the Kane Family Scholarship Program.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Kane Family Scholar program provides merit-based scholarships annually to cover tuition, books and fees for up to five years of study. Established in 2006, the scholarship initially allowed students to attend either Pikes Peak Community College or UCCS. This year, the program expanded to include students from four southern Colorado community colleges. <\/p>\n
Based on average current costs of a bachelor\u2019s degree at a public college in Colorado, a Kane Scholarship is worth more than $35,000.<\/p>\n
