{"id":423,"date":"2009-05-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-05-04T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=423"},"modified":"2009-05-04T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-05-04T07:00:00","slug":"uccs-professor-community-advocate-wins-10000-service-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=423","title":{"rendered":"UCCS PROFESSOR, COMMUNITY ADVOCATE WINS $10,000 SERVICE AWARD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Abby Ferber, professor of sociology and women\u2019s and ethnic studies at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, will be honored with the 2009 Chase Faculty Community Service award at Tuesday\u2019s annual UCCS Campus Awards ceremony. <\/p>\n<p>Ferber was honored for her work with Smart-Girl, a local nonprofit that organizes activities and programs that help adolescent girls develop and practice attitudes, skills, and behaviors that will lead to success and self-sufficiency. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI became interested in Smart-Girl because I felt the work of the organization was widely and urgently needed. As a woman, I wish there had been a program like Smart-Girl when I was an adolescent,\u201d said Ferber. \u201cAs a mother, I would like to see this program grow and become more widely available to girls like my daughter.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Ferber has served on Smart-Girl\u2019s board of directors since 2002, and has built a partnership between the organization and UCCS, opening opportunities for women\u2019s and ethnic studies students to intern at Smart-Girl. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbby has been a driving force in the success of Smart-Girl, an inspiring board member to others, and an unflaggingly cheerful volunteer,\u201d said Nicky Marone, CEO of Smart-Girl. \u201cI can\u2019t think of anyone more deserving to win this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Chase Faculty Community Service Award is funded annually by an endowment from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation through the CU Foundation, established with a 1991 gift of $100,000. The endowment provides an annual award of $10,000 to a full-time faculty member at the University of Colorado who has rendered exceptional service in his or her community.
