Pikes Peak, Larry Heller (1905-1983)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

COLORADO SPRINGS \u2013 Area landscape artists who practice outdoor or plein air painting are invited to a no-charge workshop and overview of the work of noted local artist Larry Heller Aug. 11 at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Heller Center for Arts & Humanities.<\/p>\n

The \u201cPaint Out\u201d is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 11 on the grounds of the Heller Center, a 34-acre retreat nested into the bluffs near the main UCCS campus. Painters will practice their craft, meet Heller Center board members, and learn about Larry and Dorothy Heller. Registration is free and open to the first 25 people who register.<\/p>\n

\u201cArtists will have the opportunity to paint views of Pikes Peak and Eagle Rock in an area that is pristine and undeveloped but just steps from the center of campus,\u201d Rhonda Goodman-Gaghan, curator, Heller Center for Arts & Humanities said.<\/p>\n

Goodman-Gaghan will lead a discussion of Larry Heller\u2019s landscapes and other artwork on the property. Chris Alvarez, owner, Alvarez Art School, will lead a critique of the participating artists\u2019 work in mid-afternoon. Alvarez previously taught at UCCS and Cottonwood Center for the Arts.<\/p>\n

Plein air painting is the act of painting outdoors and is in contrast to studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look. The style increased in popularity in the mid-19th<\/sup> century as emerging styles, including Impressionists, emphasized natural light and pre-packaged paints became available. The style remains popular today.<\/p>\n

Larry Heller (1905-1983), is known for his idealized Western paintings. He also created several bronze sculptures located on the property. He and his wife, Dorothy, built their home in the 1940s using a Pueblo Revival style in an effort to complement surrounding rock formations. Dorothy Heller (1905-1999) was one of the first female members of the Colorado Springs Police Department. She donated the home and surrounding land to UCCS in 1996 for use in arts and humanities education. In 2010, following restorations and updates, UCCS opened the Heller Center.<\/p>\n
