An engineer who led the construction of the first certified environmentally friendly higher education building in Colorado will direct the Department of Facilities Services at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
Gary Reynolds, former director of facilities services at Colorado College, will begin at UCCS Dec. 1 and will lead efforts to construct new buildings at UCCS as well as the maintenance of current campus buildings and grounds. His appointment was announced by Brian Burnett, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are delighted that Gary will be joining our campus,\u201d Burnett said. \u201cHe has more than 25 years of college and university construction and management experience that will help improve the UCCS campus and lead its continuing construction program.\u201d<\/p>\n
For more than 10 years, Reynolds served as Colorado College\u2019s director of facilities services, providing oversight for operations, maintenance, capital planning, construction and utilities in addition to transportation and security services. He led the construction of Tutt Science Center at the college, which became Colorado higher education\u2019s first \u201cgreen\u201d building by achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) national certification.<\/p>\n
Previously, Reynolds served in several positions during 16 years at Iowa State University, Ames. His positions included director of facilities management, associate director, assistant director and heading the university\u2019s facilities engineering and energy management offices. At Iowa State, he also served as a part-time instructor of mechanical engineering courses. He is a certified ski instructor, certified flight instructor and a management training facilitator. He began his professional career as a mechanical engineer in the private sector.<\/p>\n

Environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of UCCS strategic planning. The campus recently opened its first \u201cgreen\u201d building, a campus recreation center, and launched a campus-wide recycling program. Other efforts include energy conservation, renovations to make existing buildings more efficient, and new construction to meet LEED standards.<\/p>\n
Reynolds holds bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degrees in engineering from Iowa State University, is licensed as a professional mechanical engineer and certified as an Iowa Class A Energy Auditor. He is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Colorado Engineering Society, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers, and the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers where he served as president.<\/p>\n
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado, and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
