COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — One of America\u2019s most respected writers, known for his biographies of American leaders, will speak at UCCS as part of a scholarship fundraising effort.<\/p>\n
David McCullough, winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom as well as two-time recipient of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, will speak at UCCS Sept. 28 during a Reach Your Peak Scholarship fundraising dinner.<\/p>\n
A 6 p.m. dinner will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. address by McCullough. The event will be in the new Campus Recreation Center on the west side of the UCCS campus.<\/p>\n
Lecture-only tickets for the event are $35 for general public, $15 for staff\/faculty, $10 for students and UCCS alumni. UCCS students are free. A gifted speaker, McCollough has lectured throughout the nation, at the White House, and in a rarity for a private citizen, before a joint session of Congress. His works include \u201c1776,\u201d \u201cJohn Adams,\u201d \u201cTruman,\u201d \u201cThe Johnstown Flood,\u201d \u201cThe Great Bridge,\u201d \u201cThe Path Between Seas,\u201d \u201cMornings on Horseback,\u201d and \u201cBrave Companions.\u201d Additionally, he hosted the PBS programs \u201cSmithsonian World\u201d and \u201cThe American Experience\u201d and narrated documentaries including \u201cThe Civil War.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the words of the citation accompanying his honorary degree from Yale, \u201cAs an historian, he paints with words, giving us pictures of the American people that live, breathe, and above all, confront the fundamental issues of courage, achievement, and moral character.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born in Pittsburgh in 1933, Mr. McCullough was educated at Yale University , graduating with honors in English literature. An avid reader, traveler, and landscape painter, he lives in West Tisbury, Mass. with his wife Rosalee Barnes McCullough. <\/p>\n
The Reach Your Peak Scholarship Program provides high-achieving low-income students with scholarships to UCCS. Launched in 2000, the program is generously supported by Bruce and Anne Shepard, Colorado Springs, and other community members. There are 120 students at UCCS who receive Reach Your Peak scholarships.<\/p>\n
Lecture sponsors include the Hill Foundation, ENT Federal Credit Union, and the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado.<\/p>\n
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado, and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
