Circular saws, disposable baby diapers and Liquid Paper correction fluid are products that may appear to have little in common.<\/p>\n
But each was invented by a woman, highlighting the often overlooked role women play in bringing new ideas and products to market, according to Michael Larson, El Pomar Professor of Engineering at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 25, Larson will lead \u201cMothers of Invention\u201d a how-to workshop designed to help women test their ideas, develop them, and either take products to market or sell the idea to an established company.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday\u2019s women wear many hats,\u201d Larson, named 2005 New Orleans Innovator of the Year, said. \u201cIn fulfilling these roles, they invent solutions to all sorts of challenges life throws their way. The entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners is the fuel for America\u2019s economic engine. Women, moms in particular, represent a great reservoir of entrepreneurial energy that can contribute mightily to the economic development of our region.\u201d<\/p>\n
A member of the Tulane University faculty for more than 12 years, Larson was displaced by Hurricane Katrina. He joined the UCCS faculty in Aug. 2006. In New Orleans, he founded a studio for creative design and co-founded two companies.<\/p>\n
Topics planned for the half-day (8:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m.) workshop at the Garden Pavillion of the Penrose House, 1661 Mesa Avenue, include protecting ideas, determining demand, developing prototypes, establishing a business, and product manufacture and distribution.<\/p>\n
