COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. \u2013 A dozen international visitors will experience the largest of American holidays in addition to U.S. higher education and industry in a July 1-8 visit to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
The UCCS colleges of business, engineering, and education will host 12 students from Yeungjin College, Daegu, South Korea, providing an educational experience that includes fireworks and barbeque in addition to classroom sessions and tours of local industries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are honored to have guests from our partner university visit and experience first-hand American culture, education and industry,\u201d La Vonne Neal, dean, College of Education, said. \u201cWe are deeply appreciative of the support from local Korean-American leaders in making this a positive experience for our visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
The visit is intended to provide practical knowledge of the English language as used in engineering and business environments in addition to a sampling of American culture.<\/p>\n
Accompanying the students is Eun-ju Kim, senior director of international affairs, Yeungjin College. She is one of the highest-ranking women in Korean higher education.<\/p>\n
Students will spend time with executives from Atmel and Agilent and with UCCS faculty members discussing business and engineering trends. Additionally, visits to the Colorado School of Mines and the Molsen-Coors brewing plant in Golden are planned. On July 4, students and hosts will attend Independence Day celebrations in Memorial Park.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is important that students forge connections on their visit here and apply academic theory to the global economy,\u201d Neal said. \u201cWe hope this visit will encourage other Korean students to study at UCCS and create opportunities for our students to study abroad.\u201d<\/p>\n
In January, UCCS announced what is believed to be the first partnership between a U.S. university and a Korean university to create a model U.S. city in Daegu, South Korea with details ranging from a post office to retail outlets selling American products. The $40 million project is a joint effort of the UCCS College of Education, Yeungjin College and the Korean government to provide Korean citizens the opportunity to experience American culture and enroll in English language programs. The village is scheduled to open in Sept. 2007.<\/p>\n
With more than 2.5 million people, Daegu is the fourth largest city in South Korea. It is the capital of North Gyeongsang province and houses three American military bases.<\/p>\n
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado, and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The University offers 29 bachelor\u2019s degrees, 18 masters\u2019, and four doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,600 students annually.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
