COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO \u2013 All University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Intercollegiate sports teams achieved a grade-point average of 3.0 (B) or better this past year, Athletic Department officials announced today (June 27).<\/p>\n
Led by Academic All-Americans Patrick Hannaway (men\u2019s basketball) and Lindsay Shandera (softball), Mountain Lion student-athletes earned an aggregate GPA of 3.15 during the spring 2007 semester and 3.14 in the fall. Hannaway plans to attend medical school while Shandera works as an accountant.<\/p>\n
\u201cAcademics will always carry a higher priority than athletics at UCCS,\u201d said athletic director Stephen Kirkham. \u201cThis past year, UCCS student-athletes demonstrated that they can have success competitively without sacrificing the high academic standards of our institution.\u201d<\/p>\n
Student-athletes grades exceeded the all UCCS undergraduate grade average. The all-student GPA was 2.99 for the fall semester and 3.04 for spring.<\/p>\n
The women\u2019s volleyball team led athletic academic achievement with a team GPA of 3.29 for the spring semester. For the cumulative GPA, the men\u2019s golf team leads with a 3.30. All teams had a 3.0 or better grade average.<\/p>\n
UCCS competes in men\u2019s soccer, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor track and outdoor track and women\u2019s volleyball, basketball, cross country, softball, indoor track and outdoor track.<\/p>\n
A total of 113 student-athletes on a team\u2019s roster from the first day of practice to the conclusion of the season, or who were in red-shirt status, were included in the statistics.<\/p>\n
UCCS athletic teams also excelled on the field this past year. The women\u2019s cross country team finished seventh nationally, the men\u2019s golf team won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship. Men\u2019s cross country, men\u2019s basketball, women\u2019s softball and women\u2019s volleyball teams qualified for postseason competition.<\/p>\n
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
