A June 20 enrollment report released today showed 2,782 students enrolled, a 158 student or 6 percent increase in headcount, from the summer 2006 session.

“We are pleased that students are taking advantage of the summer months to start their college career or continue their education,” Steve Ellis, director, Admissions and Records, said. “For many students, taking a course or two in the summer allows them a jump start on the fall semester or to complete their degrees early.”

The 16-week UCCS fall semester begins Aug. 20. Applications for admission are still being accepted. For more information about enrollment and admission requirements, visit www.uccs.edu or call 262-3383.

Highlighting the enrollment increase is a 121 student or 13.5 percent increase in men who enrolled, 1,017 this summer compared to 896 a year ago. There were 1,765 women enrolled, a 37 student or 2.1 percent increase, from a year ago.

“That there are more than 120 additional men on campus this summer is noteworthy, given national trends” Ellis said. “It is possible that economics shifts within certain sectors such as construction as well as increased efforts by the university to connect with members of the armed forces, are encouraging young men to seek the career advancement higher education can provide. Clearly, college education is one of the best investments young people can make towards their future growth and earning power.”

National research shows those with a college degree will earn more than a $1 million more during their careers than someone with only a high school diploma.

The average student credit hour load for the summer is six hours, generally two courses. This summer, the 2,782 students enrolled will generate 16,469 credit hours, a 1,043 credit hour or 6.8 percent increase from a year ago.

UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
