Kennedy to the current battle for the nation\u2019s top elected post will speak at 6 p.m. March 9 in Centennial Hall on the campus of the University of Colorado Colorado Sprngs.<\/p>\n<p>Randall Balmer, the John Phillips Professor in Religion, Dartmouth University, will present \u201cReligion and Presidential Politics: Past, Present and Future,\u201d as part of a free community lecture. The event is sponsored by the UCCS Center for Religious Diversity and Public Life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis primary season leading up to the presidential election in November has already proved unique if not bizarre,\u201d Jeff Scholes, assistant professor, Department of Philosophy, and center director said. \u201cThe role of religion &#8212; or lack of it &#8212; in the lives of several of the main candidates is certainly contributing to the odd nature of this race so far. Dr. Balmer\u2019s timely lecture will help us make sense of the religious expression in this presidential race by not only looking back at the past and but also addressing what this current race portends for religion in the political domain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Balmer joined the Dartmouth faculty in 2012 and previously was a 27-year member of the faculty at Columbia University where he was a professor of American religious history. He earned a bachelor\u2019s degree from Trinity College, Palos Heights, Illinois, a master\u2019s degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois, master\u2019s and Ph.D. from Princeton University and a master\u2019s degree from Union Theological Seminary, New York.<\/p>\n<p>His publications include \u201cRedeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter,\u201d \u201cFirst Freedom: The Fight for Religious Liberty,\u201d and \u201cGod in the White House: How Faith Shaped the Presidency from John F. Kennedy to George W.
