COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado \u2013 Using the largest municipal fraud case in U.S. history as a backdrop, University of Colorado Colorado Springs students, faculty and local business leaders will discuss the ethical implications of corruption during a Nov. 5 town hall meeting.<\/p>\n

The Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at UCCS, part of the UCCS College of Business, in cooperation with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy Center for the Public Trust, will sponsor the discussion scheduled for 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Upper Lodge on the UCCS campus. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

“We are pleased to support and provide the venue for this important discussion,” Venkat Reddy, dean, College of Business, said. “Unethical business practices impact communities both large and small, and it is a critical time for ethics in business to be part of our national conversations about education.\u201d<\/p>\n

The discussion will center on the case of the former Dixon, Illinois city controller Rita Crundwell who embezzled $53 million during a period of more than 20 years. Her case was chronicled in the documentary, “All the Queen\u2019s Horses,” portions of which will be shown at the event. Organizers hope the film and discussion will raise awareness of white collar crime and the importance of ethical decision making. In addition to clips from the documentary, there will be a panel discussion including a question and answer period, with a reception to follow.<\/p>\n

About the speaker<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kelly Richmond Pope is an associate professor at DePaul University’s Driehaus College of Business. She earned a doctorate in accounting from Virginia Tech and is a licensed certified public accountant. She worked in the forensic accounting practice at KPMG, LLP on anti-money laundering engagements, insurance fraud investigations, and fraud risk management projects.<\/p>\n

Her fraud research has been published in leading academic journals such as Behavioral Research in Accounting, Auditing: A Journal of Theory & Practice, and Journal of Business Ethics. She co-authored “The A.B.C.\u2019s of Behavioral Forensics: Using Psychology to Prevent, Detect and Deter Fraud” published by John Wiley & Sons. Additionally, she is a freelance writer for Forbes.com, The Daily Beast and The Washington Post.<\/p>\n
