Throughout its history, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs has worked to accommodate the special needs of its students, many of whom are active duty members of the United States military or members of reserve units.<\/p>\n
We continue to do so today and will continue to do so in the future.<\/p>\n
Members of the military and their families, receive in-state tuition rates and are routinely extended every possible courtesy when called to active duty or when their military obligations interfere with coursework. Some recently published examples did not accurately portray the circumstances of individual cases.<\/p>\n
These courtesies include the extension of course withdrawal dates and 100 percent tuition refunds in the event of active duty call-up or military deployment. Refunds were issued to students during Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Hurricane Katrina relief. These refunds allowed students to maintain avenues for financial aid, including the GI Bill.<\/p>\n
The student petition now circulating asks that students who are also in military service be excused for missed classes. I believe UCCS faculty members make every effort possible to help all students who miss class for reasons out of their control.<\/p>\n
This is my expectation of myself and other members of the UCCS faculty. I have every reason to believe this expectation is being upheld.<\/p>\n
Vice Chancellors Jim Henderson and Peg Bacon, Dean of Students Tamara Moore, and I will meet with the UCCS student co-executives to explain current UCCS policies, clarify the circumstances of special examples or problems, and to hear their concerns.<\/p>\n
I am confident of a positive exchange of information and resolution to what I believe are misunderstandings or perceived differences.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
