COLORADO<\/p>\n

SPRINGS, COLO. –Winners of the 23rd annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad at<\/p>\n

the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs were announced April 28.<\/span><\/span>\n

style=’color:black’><\/p>\n

The 2006 Olympiad<\/p>\n

brought together 450 middle and high school students from across Colorado.<\/p>\n

The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and<\/p>\n

present the answers as complete essay-type solutions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

First prize was awarded to Sam Elder, a sophomore from Poudre High School,<\/p>\n

Fort Collins. He received a gold medal of the Olympiad, a $1,200 scholarship<\/p>\n

to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a<\/p>\n

$1,000 UCCS Chancellor?s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO<\/p>\n

?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, complete set of four books by<\/p>\n

Alexander Soifer, and Wolfram Research software. Elder?s mathematics teacher,<\/p>\n

Rita Winski, will receive a Texas Instruments software package. For the<\/p>\n

first time in the 23-year history of the event, the winner solved completely<\/p>\n

?The Famous Five? problems of the Olympiad. This is Elder?s first victory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second prize was awarded to Hannah Alpert, a junior from Fairview High<\/p>\n

School, Boulder. She received a silver medal of the Olympiad, a $600<\/p>\n

scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year<\/p>\n

college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO<\/p>\n

?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, complete set of four books by<\/p>\n

Alexander Soifer, and Wolfram Research software. <\/p>\n

Third prize was presented to Leonid<\/p>\n

Ovanesyan, a junior from Smoky Hill High School, Aurora. He received a bronze<\/p>\n

medal of the Olympiad, a $300 scholarship to be used at any certified<\/p>\n

American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s<\/p>\n

Watch, complete set of four books by Alexander Soifer, and Wolfram Research<\/p>\n

software.<\/p>\n

Fourth Prize was presented to Daniel<\/p>\n

Pascua, a sophomore from Liberty High School, Colorado Springs. He received<\/p>\n

CASIO ?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, Wolfram Research<\/p>\n

software, and a pioneering book ?A New Kind of Science? by Steven Wolfram,<\/p>\n

the founder and CEO of Wolfram Research.<\/p>\n

Art Award was presented to Emily<\/p>\n

Giles, a junior from Falcon High School. Literary Award was presented to\n

style=’color:red’> <\/span>Tyler Henrie, a sophomore from Sand Creek High<\/p>\n

School.<\/p>\n

First honorable mention contestants received Wolfram<\/p>\n

Research software. The Second Honorable Mention winners received a CASIO or<\/p>\n

Texas Instruments scientific calculator. All of the above 72 winners will<\/p>\n

receive a CASIO software, CD-ROM ClassPad300 Emulation. <\/p>\n

students have participated in the Colorado Math Olympiad. They have written<\/p>\n

over 81,000 essays and were awarded some $218,000 in prizes. The Olympiad is a<\/p>\n

unique joint effort of school districts, schools, institutions of higher<\/p>\n

education, business community, and local and state governments. The<\/p>\n

Twenty-Fourth Annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad is scheduled for April 20.<\/p>\n
