COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are literary masterpieces that Hollywood deemed worthy of bringing to the big screen. But what makes Jane Austen’s early 19th century novels great for 21st century movies? <\/p>\n
It could be riveting plot lines and complex characters, or it could be classic tales of infidelity and deceit, according to a professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
Joan Klingel Ray, professor, Department of English, and president, Jane Austen Society of North America, will delve into various Austen complexities during a four-part campus lecture and discussion series.<\/p>\n
The series will begin at 2 p.m. March 19 at the Kraemer Family Library on the UCCS campus. The first lecture, “Not Just Another Pretty Face: Meeting Jane Austen,” will examine the life of this famed author. Three other sessions will encourage audience discussion of Austen’s work. Those who attend should bring a copy of each week’s featured book. Campus parking is free on Sundays. Events are free of charge. The April 30 session will include a high tea complete with Earl Grey and crumpets.<\/p>\n
For six years, Ray has served as president of the Jane Austen Society of North America. In 1994, she was selected as a University of Colorado President’s Teaching Scholar, a lifetime title awarded to faculty members for exemplary teaching and scholarship. Ray’s current research projects include the Dictionary of Literary Biography volume on Austen.<\/p>\n
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
