It is designed to attract students to the study of mathematics and encourage them to pursue a mathematics-related field. Alex Soifer, professor, College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, has coordinated the Colorado Math Olympiad since 1984. It is the largest event of its kind in the nation.

“The problems we offer Olympians show that mathematics deserves epithets such as beautiful, elegant and surprising. Typical school mathematics does not provide this type of inspiration, ” Soifer said.

The event requires each participant to solve five mind-boggling mathematical problems and present their answers in essay form. These mental athletes have four hours to complete their solutions.

Participants compete for gold, silver and bronze medals, awards, prizes and scholarship money. Fukaya will present the winners with one of the CASIO calculators that he designed. Other prizes are provided by annual competition sponsors such as, Wolfram Research, Texas Instruments, the City of Colorado Springs, Sanborn Technologies, the CU-Bookstore, Air Academy School District 20, Colorado Springs School District 11, Harrison School District 2, Widefield School District 3. Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak offers $1,000 scholarships to UCCS to all medal winning contestants. The judges also award scholarships that can be used at any certified American university.

Approximately 100-150 awards will be presented at an April 28 ceremony on campus.

For additional background on the Math Olympiad and to see examples of past problems, visit http://www.uccs.edu/~asoifer/olympiad.html.

UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
