\"UCCS<\/a>COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. \u2013 About 360 middle school girls from throughout southern Colorado will visit the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Nov. 14 to learn about college and career options in high-demand science, technology, engineering and math fields.<\/p>\n

From 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m at Berger Hall and the Gallogly Events Center on the UCCS campus, girls from Calhan, Colorado Springs, Ellicott, Falcon, Fountain, Monument, Salida, Widefield and Woodland Park will participate in \u201cGirls\u2019 STEM Experience,\u201d part of the UCCS Southern Colorado Girls\u2019 STEM Initiative. The girls will attend workshops taught by local professionals and university faculty including \u201cBungee Barbee\u201d and \u201cCase of the Croaking Chinchillas\u201d designed to demonstrate chemistry, engineering and physics principles.<\/p>\n

Those activities will be supplemented by presentations including Yeni Violeta Garcia, former STEM education coordinator, Colorado Department of Education. Garcia will share her personal story of immigrating from war-torn El Salvador as well as outlining career opportunities for women. During lunch, the girls will meet with more than 40 women who work in science, technology, engineering or math-related fields.<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen make up 53 percent of the nation\u2019s population and 48 percent of today’s college-aged population,\u201d Kathleen Fitzpatrick, program manager, Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education, said. \u201cBut in most states, only about 35 percent of STEM degrees are obtained by women and far less in areas such as engineering and computer science. Through events such as this, we want to let young women know what\u2019s possible and why it\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics workers play a key role in the sustained growth and stability of the U.S. economy and are a critical component to the U.S. future competitiveness. STEM occupations are projected to grow by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018, compared to less than 10 percent growth for non-STEM occupations. Additionally, STEM workers earn wages that are 26 percent more than their non-STEM counterparts, according to U.S. Department of Commerce.<\/p>\n

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is one of the fastest growing universities in Colorado. The university offers 37 bachelor\u2019s degrees, 19 master\u2019s and five doctoral degrees. UCCS enrolls about 11,000 students on campus annually and another 2,000 in online programs.
