Endowed professorships and distinguished faculty chairs assist the university in recruiting and retaining top faculty members. At UCCS, there are three endowed professorships and three endowed chairs.

“We are greatly appreciative of Dorothy and Sandy Kraemer’s continued investment in this campus and its future,” Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. “This endowment of a professorship moves forward a campus initiative to develop national expertise in the issues of our nation’s seniors.”

Sandy Kraemer has been a practicing lawyer, author, inventor, civic leader and philanthropist in Colorado Springs, since 1963. He was elected to two terms as regent from Congressional District 5 to the University of Colorado Board of Regents, serving as chair of the board 1982-83.

In 2003, CU awarded Sandy Kraemer the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.

Sara Honn Qualls, professor, Psychology, will be the first person to hold the Kraemer Family Professor of Aging Studies professorship. Qualls specializes in the psychological needs of older Americans and directs the Gerontology Center. She joined the faculty in 1984 and led efforts to establish a doctoral program in gerospsychology, one of only four such programs in the nation and one of two offered at a public university. The first class began in Fall 2004.

The program targets students who already hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees in psychology and provides lecture-based course work, practical clinical experience, an off-site clinical internship, a comprehensive examination and a dissertation of original scholarship. A minimum of five years post-baccalaureate work is anticipated.

The students work closely with the CU Aging Center, a community-based mental health services and research facility located near the Colorado Springs Senior Center, 1510 N. Hancock. Additionally, the program will work cooperatively with aging research and education efforts based at the CU Health Sciences Center in Denver and the Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities.

By mid-century seniors will outnumber young people for the first time in history. The number of people more than 85 years old is projected to increase from 4.2 million in 2000 to 9 million in 2030. The number of persons more than 76 years old in the world is expected to increase from 276 million in 1908 to 1.1 billion in 2025. Colorado has one of the fastest growing aging populations in the nation, with some counties expected to have 600 percent increases in population over age 85. To meet the needs of this population, 65 full-time practicing geropsychologists are needed. The state currently has ten individuals who identify themselves as geropsychologists. There are three on the UCCS faculty.

From June 30 to July 3, UCCS will host the 2005 National Clinical Geropsychology Conference, “Psychotherapy for Depression and Anxiety in Older Adults.” This professional conference will be at Cheyenne Mountain Resort. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,800 students annually.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO A Colorado Springs couple will create an endowed professorship at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to encourage the further study of aging issues.
