COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO An education professor whose career includes stints in private business, in U.S. Army intelligence and as a middle school teacher will be the new dean of the College of Education at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n

La Vonne I. Neal, associate professor, Department of Education, Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, was selected following a national search. She will begin as dean of the College of Education July 1, pending approval by the University of Colorado Board of Regents.<\/p>\n

Rogers Redding, vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, announced Neal’s appointment.<\/p>\n

“La Vonne Neal brings a wealth of experiences in a number of different areas to our campus,” Redding said. “I believe she will lead the faculty and staff of the College of Education in creating a College of Education for the twenty-first century.”<\/p>\n

Since 1997, Neal has held a variety of positions at Southwestern University, a Methodist Church-affiliated college of about 1,300 students. Her positions included director of a program for secondary school students with academic or social challenges, director of certification programs for secondary school teachers and the teaching of special and general education courses for future teachers. In 2001, her research on the correlation of African-American males and their walking styles with placement in special education courses was widely publicized. Her other research topics include human rights, the role of culture in effective teaching, and special education.<\/p>\n

Previously, Neal was an adjunct professor at Huston-Tillotson College, Austin, Texas, and a middle school history teacher in Round Rock, Texas. She also served 13 years in the U.S. Army, including two years active duty in the Second Armored Division where she served as the first woman Battlefield Information Center officer. She specialized in Soviet weapons and tactics analysis and achieved the rank of captain. She also served in management roles for Johnson and Johnson Inc. and Philip-Morris Companies.<\/p>\n

Neal holds a bachelor’s degree from LaSalle University, Philadelphia, and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. The Philadelphia native was a star athlete and member of USA Track, competing in the 100-meter hurdles. <\/p>\n

“I am thrilled to be the dean of the College of Education at UCCS,” Neal said from her Round Rock, Texas, home. “I like to run fast and traverse obstacles, both literally and figuratively. I look forward to collaborating with the college’s faculty and staff to reach out to the military installations as well as the school districts and corporations to connect the college to the Colorado Springs community.”<\/p>\n

Neal replaces Mark Malone, professor, Education, who served as interim dean for the 2004-2005 academic year. He will return to the faculty.<\/p>\n

UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,800 students annually. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
