Winners of the 22nd annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs were announced April 29 at the Olympiad awards ceremony.<\/p>\n
The 2005 Olympiad brought together 650 middle and high school students from across Colorado. The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and to present the answers as complete essay-type solutions.<\/p>\n
First prize was awarded to Mark Heim, a senior from Thompson Valley High School, Loveland. He received a gold medal, a $1,500 scholarship to any U.S. college or university, a $1,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship from UCCS, CASIO Cassiopeia Pocket Viewer, CASIO “Super-Calculator” Classpad 300, and Wolfram Research’s software Mathematica. This is Heim’s third victory at the Colorado Math Olympiad. He won first prize last year, and tied for first prize two years ago with another three-time winner Bryce Herdt.<\/p>\n
Second prize was awarded to Sam Elder, a freshman from Poudre High School, Fort Collins. He received a silver medal, a $1,000 scholarship to any U.S. college or university, a $1,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship from UCCS, CASIO Cassiopeia Pocket Viewer, CASIO “Super-Calculator” Classpad 300, and Wolfram Research’s software Mathematica.<\/p>\n
Third prize was presented to Hannah Alper, a sophomore from Fairview High School, Boulder. She received a bronze medal, a $500 scholarship to any U.S. college or university, a $1,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship from UCCS, Wolfram Research’s software Mathematica, CASIO Cassiopeia Pocket Viewer, and CASIO “Super-Calculator” Classpad 300.<\/p>\n
Fourth prize was presented to the following five Olympians:<\/p>\n

Each of them received a CASIO watch, Intermap Software, Texas Instruments graphing calculator, and a pioneering book “A New Kind of Science” by Dr Steven Wolfram, the Founder and CEO of Wolfram Research, the maker of the celebrated software Mathematica.<\/p>\n

In the 22 years of Colorado Mathematical Olympiad, more than 14,600 students have participated and written more than 79,000 essays. The students have been awarded some $208,000 in prizes. The Olympiad is a unique joint effort of school districts, schools, institutions of higher education, business community and local and state governments.<\/p>\n
