COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO — A 23-year veteran of the faculty at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will be associate vice chancellor for research and dean of the graduate school pending approval of the CU Board of Regents, university officials announced today, Jan. 18.<\/p>\n

Tom Huber, 57, was selected following an internal-to-the-campus search to replace David Schmidt. Schmidt has served since 2000 and will return to a faculty position in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. The CU Board of Regents will consider Huber’s appointment at the Jan. 20 meeting. If approved, he will begin Jan. 21.<\/p>\n

Rogers Redding, vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, announced Huber’s appointment.<\/p>\n

“Tom Huber is an outstanding faculty member of this university with a proven record as a researcher and teacher,” Redding said. “I believe he will continue the positive directions set by David Schmidt, building upon them to help the university reach its goals.”<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Huber was named faculty associate for research and graduate education. He has served as a member of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies faculty since 1981, served as chair of the department for eight years and for 10 years directed the Image, Map and Geographic Education Laboratory on campus. Prior to joining the CU-Colorado Springs faculty, Huber was a member of the faculty at Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y., and an assistant professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has published several books, including “Colorado, An Aerial Geography of the Highest State” and “The San Luis Valley of Colorado, a Geographical Sketch,” in addition to numerous publications in scholarly journals. His research focuses on the geography of Colorado and resource management using image processing with more than $1 million in research grant awards.<\/p>\n

Huber has received numerous awards including the Outstanding Teaching Award, the Presidential Teaching Scholar Award and a Fulbright fellowship. In 2000, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education awarded the Geography and Environmental Studies Department its Program of Excellence Award.<\/p>\n

He earned a doctoral degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a master’s from Syracuse (N.Y.) University, and a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy.<\/p>\n

“Dave Schmidt set a very high standard in this job, I can only hope to continue to serve the campus as well as he has,” Huber stated.<\/p>\n

As associate vice chancellor for research and dean of the graduate school, Huber will be responsible for policies supporting faculty research and compliance with federal and state regulations as well as coordinating admissions and other requirements for the university’s graduate programs. <\/p>\n

CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,800 students annually. <\/p>\n
