COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO Students enrolled at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will be eligible to receive up to $1,000 in funding for their scholarly, creative and community activities.<\/p>\n
Linda Nolan, Dean, College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, announced the 2004-2005 award application deadline of October 15, and encouraged current undergraduate students to apply for awards in one of five categories: civic, independent, international, renaissance and collaborative research.<\/p>\n
The scholarships are available to undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the largest college at CU-Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
“Last year’s recipients of the Undergraduate Scholar Awards were true examples of the outstanding research and creative work taking place at our university,” Nolan said. “We are pleased to once again offer support for undergraduate students to pursue advanced study in areas of personal interest.”<\/p>\n
In the Civic Scholars Program, students will propose community service projects that benefit Colorado Springs or the campus. The Independent Scholars Program encourages students to pursue advanced scholarship in their major area of study. In the International Scholars Program, awards will be given to assist students who plan to study abroad while engaging in research or creative work. Students who propose projects that cross multiple academic disciplines will be eligible for awards through the Renaissance Scholars Program. The Collaborative Research Scholars Program will make awards to students engaged in academic research in conjunction with a faculty member.<\/p>\n

Students selected to receive awards will present their works at the Undergraduate Conference on Research, Scholarly, Creative and Public Service Activities on April 30, 2005. <\/p>\n Nolan said the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences hopes to take the lead in the following areas:<\/p>\n -Providing undergraduate programs of national distinction that will become a model throughout the state<\/p>\n -Increasing the number of academically talented Colorado high school graduates who attend CU-Colorado Springs<\/p>\n -Increasing career opportunities and the acceptance rate in outstanding graduate schools for graduates and to increase the number of students who win prestigious national and international fellowships<\/p>\n -Helping to provide a residential academic experience with an innovative, dynamic, interdisciplinary curriculum and faculty mentors who value teaching and learning environments that maximize student involvement and student-faculty interaction<\/p>\n -Motivating and encouraging students to blaze new trails and undertake advanced work. Creativity, innovation, exploration, and risk-taking are qualities faculty seek to instill in our students.<\/p>\n CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees.
