{"id":136,"date":"2004-08-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-08-04T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=136"},"modified":"2004-08-04T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-08-04T07:00:00","slug":"beth-el-college-of-nursing-and-health-sciences-celebrates-100th-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=136","title":{"rendered":"BETH-EL COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.  &#8212; A juried exhibit featuring local and regional artists will open a two-week series of centennial celebrations for the Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Art and Healing&#8221; exhibit opens Aug. 13 and will continue from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 16-21. The exhibit culminates in a centennial fundraising gala dinner and silent auction at 6 p.m. Aug. 21.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit will feature more than 75 works from professional and amateur artists, each centering on a theme of healing. Several pieces were submitted by local health care professionals including Dr. John Genrich, Dr. Barbara Towne and Dr. Gary Parks. The art will be on display at University Hall, located on the northwest corner of the intersection of Austin Bluffs Parkway and Union Boulevard. A 5 p.m. Aug. 13 opening and reception are scheduled. <\/p>\n<p>Genrich&#8217;s watercolor, &#8220;Chemo Pals,&#8221; depicts two young boys who are supporting each other through chemotherapy treatments. The retired obstetrician and pediatrician will exhibit several pieces reflective of the show&#8217;s theme. Various mediums including oil and charcoal as well as a variety of artistic styles are represented.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This exhibit encourages us to think outside of the traditional box of healthcare,&#8221; Carole Schoffstall, dean, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, said. &#8220;The broader concepts of healing include the value of art to affect us both physically and emotionally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In setting the display, 35 pieces were juried. An additional 50 invited pieces will be displayed, according to event organizer and local nurse, Joanne Bonicelli. Many of the items will be for sale. These will be donated to either Beth-El, or Memorial or Penrose hospitals for display.<\/p>\n<p>Jurors included: Gerry Riggs, director, CU-Colorado Springs Gallery of Contemporary Art, Rodney Wood, gallery director, Colorado State University-Pueblo, Lea Gaydos, assistant professor, Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Taffy Mulliken, chair, Pikes Peak Community College Art Department, and Dr. John Sherman, a Colorado Springs radiologist.<\/p>\n<p>To see a list of juried art titles, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/web.uccs.edu\/bethel\/artHealing.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/web.uccs.edu\/bethel\/artHealing.htm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences Centennial Gala begins at 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at University Hall. In addition to the displayed artwork, the event will feature a silent auction, tours and dinner. Individual tickets are $100 with proceeds benefiting the college. The school was purchased by the City of Colorado Springs in 1943 and, in 1983, received accreditation as a professional college. In 1997, Beth-El merged with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n<p>CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor&#8217;s degrees, 17 master&#8217;s and two doctoral degrees.
