COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. A lifelong advocate of creating healthy sports environments for young people was recently honored by the Kansas City, Mo.-based Citizenship Through Sports Alliance.<\/p>\n
Jay Coakley, professor, Sociology, was honored as part of a tribute to those sports figures whose lives and careers reflect commitment to citizenship, sportsmanship and community service. The awards were given as part of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics meeting June 13 in Dallas.<\/p>\n
Coakley was selected based on his continuing efforts in the field of youth sports. Spanning more than 30 years, he has given more than 200 presentations to community-based groups on topics such as youth sports, gender, race and ethnicity, deviance, violence and socialization in sport settings.<\/p>\n
“It is an honor to be recognized for my efforts to help people make youth sports more humane and democratic activities for young people,” said Coakley.<\/p>\n
Coakley joined the CU-Colorado Springs faculty in 1972 and previously directed the Center for the Study of Sport and Leisure. In 2004, he published the 8th edition of “Sports in Society: Issues and Controversies,” a textbook used by students worldwide. Throughout his career, Coakley has written widely about sports and their relationship with society.<\/p>\n
He holds a master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame.<\/p>\n
Other award winners included Jamie Moyer of the Seattle Mariners, Ray Allen of the Seattle Supersonics, Edna Campbell of the Sacramento Monarchs, and Vince Dooley, athletic director, University of Georgia.<\/p>\n
The Citizenship Through Sports Alliance is the largest coalition of professional and amateur athletics organizations in the United States, focused on character in sport.
