{"id":124,"date":"2004-05-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-05-10T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=124"},"modified":"2004-05-10T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-05-10T07:00:00","slug":"sandia-national-laboratories-cu-colorado-springs-to-collaborate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=124","title":{"rendered":"SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES, CU- COLORADO SPRINGS TO COLLABORATE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO &#8212; The National Nuclear Security Administration&#8217;s Sandia National Laboratories and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will sign a memorandum of understanding as a basis for future collaborations at 11 a.m. May 11 at the CU-Colorado Springs campus.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement supports cooperative efforts between Sandia and CU-Colorado Springs for the development and manufacture of a broad range of technologies including microelectronics, micro electromechanical systems, nanotechnology, software, and numerous space and security applications.  The agreement also emphasizes advanced manufacturing technology recognizing the need to remain competitive in a global economy. <\/p>\n<p>CU-Colorado Springs recently established the Rocky Mountain Technology Alliance, an organization of industry, government, and university leaders whose objective is to establish a technology- rich, business development environment in Colorado Springs and the surrounding region.  The agreement stems from a relationship between RMTA and Sandia, specifically including Sandia&#8217;s Regional Alliance for Manufacturing Program  One of the manufacturing program&#8217;s objectives is to establish regional partnerships with universities, commercial industry, and government to engage in manufacturing research and development , exercise Sandia&#8217;s technical capabilities through technical assistance projects and help to  develop the high-tech manufacturing capabilities of current and potential partners.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders at CU-Colorado Springs and Sandia believe that they have mutual interests and capabilities. These areas include microsystems and nanotechnologies, space systems and engineering, cybersecurity, computer and communication networks, power and energy systems and advanced manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Jeremy Haefner,  dean, Engineering and Applied Sciences and Director of the Colorado Institute of Technology Transfer and Implementation at CU-Colorado Springs believes the future of the university and the economic future of the Colorado Springs region are mutually dependent on technology, specifically technology that can be developed and commercialized in the region. <\/p>\n<p> &#8220;We are citizens of the Rocky Mountain Technology Corridor &#8212; the region stretching from northern Colorado to southern New Mexico &#8212; from which much of modern technology flowed.  We will expand our applied research in the region in cooperation with our partners. This will lead to substantially increased technology commercialization and production.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t &#8211;MORE &#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Lenny Martinez, vice president of Manufacturing Systems, Science &#038; Technology at Sandia, said there are a number of potential areas for collaboration between the two organizations. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One area that we are particularly interested in at Sandia is providing technical assistance to commercial high-tech manufacturing firms in Colorado Springs and other communities throughout the Colorado in support of our regional manufacturing strategies,&#8221; Martinez said. &#8220;These type of assistance projects are of growing importance to Sandia in terms of our needs for partnerships and manufacturing supply chain development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The following is the agenda for the memorandum of understanding signing:<\/p>\n<p>10:15 a.m.\tIntroductions   Tom Saponas Lounge   Engineering Bldg. <\/p>\n<p>10:30 a.m. \tGathering\/Refreshments<\/p>\n<p>11 a.m. \t\tRemarks (Press availability question and answer period)<\/p>\n<p>11:30 \t\tSigning of Memorandum of Understanding<\/p>\n<p>Noon \t\tLunch   University Center.<\/p>\n<p>1 p.m.\t\tTour, College of Engineering and Applied Science.<\/p>\n<p>CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation.
