COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. For the first time in its 21-year history, the Math Olympiad at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will host international competitors.<\/p>\n
The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad, chaired by Alex Soifer, professor of mathematics, offers middle and high school students a chance to demonstrate academic skills and to compete for medals, scholarships and other prizes. More than 600 students are expected to sharpen their pencils and tackle five mind-bending problems beginning at 9 a.m. April 16 at the CU-Colorado Springs campus.<\/p>\n
Most of the students will come from Colorado but a five-member team from Manila and Zamboana, Philipines, is also expected to attend. The five tenth-grade students will be accompanied by two chapperones. The students were selected following a twelve-week series of Saturday training classes. They will pay their own travel and hotel expenses.<\/p>\n
“The Olympiad brings excitement to mathematics instruction, which often turns students away by mind numbing drill,” Soifer said. “The Olympiad is a powerful tool of attracting new generations to study of mathematics, and more generally creative fields, such as arts and sciences.”<\/p>\n
“In the 20 years of Colorado Mathematical Olympiad, 14,000 students have participated. They have written some 69,000 essays, and were awarded some $171,000 in prizes. The Olympiad is a unique joint effort of school districts, schools, institutions of higher education, business community and local and State governments.”<\/p>\n
Registration will take place between 8 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. April 16 in the University Center Gymnasium. There, the students will be assigned to a room and given four hours to tackle five mind-bending problems.<\/p>\n
The Colorado Mathematical Olympiad is the largest essay-type mathematical competition in the United States with participants from grades six through 12 competing against one another. Annually, prizes are provided by competition sponsors such as CASIO, Wolfram Research and Texas Instruments.<\/p>\n
Soifer promises that this year’s problems, as in previous years, will be unusual and exciting.<\/p>\n
“They will positively challenge your creativity,” he said.<\/p>\n
The goal for the 21st Math Olympiad is to whet the appetites of young mathematicians.<\/p>\n
“If you like our problems and solve some of them during or after the Olympiad, have no doubt; mathematics has entered your life and will be connected with your future work in one way or another,” Soifer said.<\/p>\n
This year, CU-Colorado Springs Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak will offer the top three winners gold, silver and bronze medalists a $1,000 scholarship to CU-Colorado Springs.<\/p>\n
There is no fee for student participation, and no limit on the number of schools or students who may participate. <\/p>\n
This year there will be a pre-registration. Each school pre-registered students by e-mail to asromero@uccs.edu beginning February 9. Check-in and registration will take place from 8:00-8:45 a.m. April 16 in the University Center Gymnasium.<\/p>\n
Winners will be announced at an April 23 awards ceremony in the Lodge at CU-Colorado Springs. At that time, Soifer will review the answers to the five questions, deliver a lecture on mathematics and present the awards. A reception will follow.<\/p>\n
