{"id":108,"date":"2004-03-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2004-03-09T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=108"},"modified":"2004-03-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2004-03-09T07:00:00","slug":"science-olympiad-presented-at-cu-colorado-springs-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pressreleases.uccs.edu\/?p=108","title":{"rendered":"SCIENCE OLYMPIAD PRESENTED AT CU-COLORADO SPRINGS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO &#8212; The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will host the Colorado Science Olympiad Southern Regional Tournament for middle and high school students from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m.,  March 6.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1000 students, teachers, and community volunteers will be present on campus for the event. <\/p>\n<p>         &#8220;Project Apollo, The Greatest Adventure in History,&#8221; will be presented by   Sam Milazzo, senior instructor, Physics,  and the United States Air Force Academy Falcon will be displayed  by Lt. Col.  James E. Imlay starting at 3:15 p.m. in the University Center Gym. An awards ceremony will follow.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament, held in connection with Science Olympiad Tournaments across the country and Canada, are designed to bolster student interest in science and engineering. The winners of the southern regional tournament compete in the Colorado State Tournament in April. The state winners will represent Colorado at the National Tournament in Ohio to be held in May.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament will feature students competing in 46 events. The contests focus on science and engineering projects, labs and experiments. Southern Colorado students may enter fifteen-member teams for the competition and the individual events allow one, two or three students to test their cooperative skills in solving problems. Medals will be presented to all first, second and third place winners. The first through fifth place teams and their coaches are awarded trophies.<\/p>\n<p>The student contestants will apply problem-solving skills to the contests. Events include tower building, Rube Goldberg-type devices containing five energy transfers, egg-drop, biology and chemistry experiments, bottle rocket launches, and many more.<\/p>\n<p>CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor&#8217;s degrees, 17 master&#8217;s and two doctoral degrees.
