COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. –A nine-member search committee for a new director of campus intercollegiate athletics at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was recently selected.
Rogers Redding, vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, will head a committee of faculty, staff and students charged with replacing Randy Cubero, the intercollegiate athletic director since 1998. Cubero announced at the Oct. 30 Colorado Board of Regents meeting his plans to retire as athletic director but to continue his relationship with the university.
Cubero’s departure date is intentionally flexible. He hopes to consult with Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and Bill Ayen, director, Network Information and Space Security Center, to continue his mentoring relationship with student athletes, and to assist in the formation of plans for a campus recreation center.
“I see this as a transition from one set of duties to another,” Cubero said.
Before joining CU-Colorado Springs, Cubero was a career U.S. Air Force officer. He retired as a brigadier general after serving as dean of the faculty at the Air Force Academy.
The search committee members are: Redding, chair; Robert Wonnett, dean of students and director, Student Auxiliary Services; Charlie Shub, professor, Computer Science; Jim Daly professor, Math; Susan Szpyrka, director, Public Safety; Graeme Badger, coach, Intercollegiate Athletics; Doug Fitzgerald, sports information director, Intercollegiate Athletics; Nicole Opferman, student-athlete; and Brian Schill, student co-executive.
CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls more than 7,600 students annually.
