COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. Construction of additional on-campus housing for 300 students at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 13 with an official groundbreaking ceremony.
Campus and university officials, including CU Regent Jerry Rutledge and Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak, will join student leaders and the project developer to ceremonially begin the project on the west side of campus off of Stanton Road. The new housing is expected to open for the fall 2004 semester.
“I’m anxious to get this project moving,” Shockley-Zalabak said. “By next fall, we will have room for 300 more students who want to enjoy the convenience of campus living as well as a stunning view of our community.”
The new student housing will be substantially different than current campus student housing or that found at most university campuses. Units will be apartment-style with one, two or four bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. Occupants will be junior or senior undergraduate students, graduate students or international students. Additionally, first-time university students who are more than 21 years old will also be eligible for the new housing units.
The approximately $16 million project will be financed through rent paid by occupants. No state funds or tuition dollars will be used to finance the project.
Drawings of the completed housing complex will be available for viewing at the ceremony.
CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls more than 7,600 students annually.
