Faculty and staff members at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak Community College will be able to take courses at each other’s campuses under the state’s tuition policy and PPCC students can live at UCCS, according to new agreements between the two schools.
Currently, all state colleges and universities provide up to six undergraduate credit hours free of charge for qualified employees. The exchange between the two schools broadens options for UCCS and PPCC faculty and staff. The number of eligible credits remains at six per employee.
UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and PPCC President Tony Kinkel will sign the two new cooperation agreements in ceremonies scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 10, at the Lodge on the UCCS campus. Following the signing ceremonies, UCCS officials will take PPCC counterparts on tours of housing.
“This is another tangible example of the cooperation between the two campuses,” Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak said. “PPCC offers unique educational and vocational opportunities as does UCCS. I’m pleased to make this benefit available both to the faculty and staff of both campuses and to provide PPCC students the opportunity to live at UCCS prior to transfer here.”
“We have worked very hard to negotiate this collaborative agreement which will greatly benefit the employees of both institutions,” said President Tony Kinkel. “At the same time, we are thrilled with this opportunity to provide PPCC students with on-campus housing, a historic first for our college.”
Beginning with the Spring 2008 Semester, UCCS and PPCC employees will be eligible to take up to six undergraduate credit hours annually at each other’s campuses without charge. The benefit will be extended to all full-time employees and proportionally to those employees on at least a half-time appointment. Temporary employees, student employees and honorarium faculty are not eligible.
Employees must register on a space available basis after the first day of classes and should also apply for the College Opportunity Fund available to undergraduate students. Supervisor approval and current employee status certification is required.

For the Fall 2008 semester, UCCS will hold 20 beds in four bedroom apartments in the Alpine Village Student Apartments until June 30. After June 30, any remaining beds will be released to any UCCS or PPCC student based on a first-come, first-served basis, unless Alpine Village has a waiting list, then any available beds will be released only to UCCS students.
For the Spring 2009 semester, PPCC students registered for nine or more credit hours up to Dec. 1 of each year will be eligible to live in UCCS student housing. After Dec. 1, UCCS and PPCC will make a determination about accepting students with a lower amount of credit hours. For the Spring semester, all beds will be assigned to any UCCS or PPCC student based on a first-come, first-served basis, unless Alpine Village has a waiting list, then any available beds will be released only to UCCS students.
For the Summer 2009, PPCC students registered for six or more credit hours up to May 15 of each year, or who are pre-registered for nine or more credit hours for the Fall semester, will be eligible to live in UCCS student housing. After May 15, UCCS and PPCC will make a determination about accepting students with a lower amount of credit hours. For the Summer semester, all beds will be assigned to any UCCS or PPCC student based on a first-come, first-served basis, unless Alpine Village has a waiting list, then any available beds will be released only to UCCS students.
PPCC students who live at UCCS will be expected to follow the UCCS Student Code of Conduct, the UCCS Resident Handbook, and the PPCC Student Code of Conduct. PPCC students will be given temporary UCCS identification cards, allowing them to use university facilities.
The agreements are the latest cooperative agreements between PPCC and UCCS. Past agreements have included course articulation agreements to assist students who transfer. The schools also cooperate in the administration of the Kane Family Scholarship which provides full tuition merit scholarships for Colorado residents to attend either school.
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado, and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The University offers 29 bachelor’s degrees, 18 master’s, and four doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,700 students.
