SPRINGS, COLO. –Winners of the 23rd annual Colorado Mathematical Olympiad at
the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs were announced April 28. style=’color:black’> The 2006 Olympiad brought together 450 middle and high school students from across Colorado. The Olympians were offered five problems and four hours to solve them and present the answers as complete essay-type solutions. First prize was awarded to Sam Elder, a sophomore from Poudre High School, Fort Collins. He received a gold medal of the Olympiad, a $1,200 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor?s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO ?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, complete set of four books by Alexander Soifer, and Wolfram Research software. Elder?s mathematics teacher, Rita Winski, will receive a Texas Instruments software package. For the first time in the 23-year history of the event, the winner solved completely ?The Famous Five? problems of the Olympiad. This is Elder?s first victory. Second prize was awarded to Hannah Alpert, a junior from Fairview High School, Boulder. She received a silver medal of the Olympiad, a $600 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO ?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, complete set of four books by Alexander Soifer, and Wolfram Research software. Third prize was presented to Leonid Ovanesyan, a junior from Smoky Hill High School, Aurora. He received a bronze medal of the Olympiad, a $300 scholarship to be used at any certified American university or four-year college, a $1,000 UCCS Chancellor’s Scholarship for CMO Medalists, CASIO ?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, complete set of four books by Alexander Soifer, and Wolfram Research software. Fourth Prize was presented to Daniel Pascua, a sophomore from Liberty High School, Colorado Springs. He received CASIO ?Super-Calculator? Classpad 300, CASIO Watch, Wolfram Research software, and a pioneering book ?A New Kind of Science? by Steven Wolfram, the founder and CEO of Wolfram Research. Art Award was presented to Emily Giles, a junior from Falcon High School. Literary Award was presented to style=’color:red’> Tyler Henrie, a sophomore from Sand Creek High School. First honorable mention contestants received Wolfram Research software. The Second Honorable Mention winners received a CASIO or Texas Instruments scientific calculator.
