COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will offer students and greater Colorado Springs community members an alternative to a traditional spring break vacation.
For the first time, UCCS is offering intensive courses during Spring Break, March 27-31, and on some weekends during the spring. The courses will provide current UCCS students and others the opportunity to take a course while others take time off.
“We see this as an opportunity for individuals who are focused on getting started on a college degree — or finishing one more quickly– to realize their goal,” Barbara Gaddis, director, Student Retention, said. “The courses will be accelerated to allow students to earn the same credit as someone enrolled in a traditional 16-week program.”
Course offerings include a study of the Hispanic heritage of Colorado and Northern New Mexico, an overview of American cinema, a marketing course with emphasis on the ski industry, and an introduction to topographic maps and compass use. This is the first time that UCCS has offered concentrated courses during Spring Break and the second half of the spring semester. Traditionally, UCCS offers courses on a 16-week schedule during the fall and spring and for eight weeks during the summer. Between fall and spring semesters, interim courses are offered.
“The UCCS faculty has experience in leading courses that fit the needs of students,” Gaddis said. “While this format is new, I am confident that students will find the experience rewarding. These courses were specifically selected because they can be taught in an accelerated format and have broad appeal.”
Many of the courses will meet in a block-style format from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Spring Break and some include Friday evening and Saturday sessions. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a subject and to work closely with faculty.

A UCCS parking permit will not be required for the Spring Break courses.
