Who: Lt. Col. Mark Thompson, professor of military science, University of Colorado Colorado Springs, will preside over a ceremony for 20 recent graduates of local colleges as they are commissioned as U.S. Army second lieutenants. The students will be joined by family members and other supporters at the ceremony.
What: Family members will pin gold bars of the second lieutenant rank on the students following a commissioning oath delivered by Brig. Gen. Robert P. Walters Jr., director of intelligence for NORAD and U.S. Northern Command.
When: 10 a.m. May 24, 2014

Why: Recent graduates from UCCS, Colorado College, Colorado Technical University, and National American University who have completed ROTC requirements will be commissioned and begin their service as Army officers.
