COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. University of Colorado at Colorado Springs junior, Jordan Nathaniel Kiper, recently earned a $6,200 scholarship to study in Serbia.
Jordan Kiper, Colorado Springs, a philosophy and visual and performing arts major, will receive the Benjamin Brown Award for International Study for the spring semester 2005. He is the second UCCS student to receive the award and one of four recipients in the CU System to receive the scholarship this year. Kiper plans to explore the relationship between philosophy of language, linguistics, and political philosophy.
The Benjamin Brown Scholarship provides CU students with up to $10,000 to support tuition, transportation, housing, food and research expenses to study in the country of their choice. The scholarship is awarded twice yearly and aims to enhance American society by promoting language fluency and cross-cultural understanding.
While in Serbia, Kiper plans to study the history of Serbian dialect and how the country’s language policies shape communities.
Members of the Benjamin Brown Scholarship Selection Committee called Kiper’s proposal one of the most far-reaching and fascinating ever received.
Kiper grew up in Colorado Springs and graduated in 1998 from Coronado High School.
The Benjamin Brown Scholarship is offered exclusively to students in the CU System and funds travel and research throughout the world. Named after CU alumnus Dr. Benjamin Brown, the scholarship is designed to support students who desire to complete advanced research abroad. As an undergraduate at CU, Brown had the opportunity to travel abroad, and the experience changed his life. After becoming a successful businessman, Brown embraced the opportunity to share his passion for travel with undergraduate students at his alma mater.
UCCS, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls about 7,800 students annually.
