COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Keller Elementary School, and area Youth Organizations will come together for a celebration of Liberty Day April 28 at UCCS.
Liberty Day is traditionally a non-partisan grassroots celebration of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The goal of Liberty Day is the protection and continuation of American liberties and its primary mission is education. This event will provide college students the opportunity to gain knowledge about the U.S. Constitution and to share this information with a team of elementary students.
Volunteers from the Lions Club, Optimist Club, and UCCS students will be Liberty Day leaders. In preparation for the event, the Liberty Day leaders will use specific Liberty Day curriculum to provide lessons on the U.S. Constitution to fifth graders from Keller Elementary School and to other youth in area organizations.
The Liberty Day kids will visit the UCCS campus April 28 to hand out free copies of the U.S. Constitution and to quiz students, faculty, staff and visitors with factual questions from the text of the Constitution. The kids will receive red Liberty Day T-shirts, 25 copies of the Constitution and a Liberty Day bag to assist them on their patriotic adventure.
The event will take place at 10 a.m. on April 28, at UCCS. It will kick off at the University Center Plaza with a welcome from a local dignitary and UCCS officials. The teams will then proceed to designated sites around the UCCS campus to speak, and quiz the campus community for about an hour. The teams will then return to the University Center Brooks Room for refreshments and a thank you from a UCCS official.
