COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO . Students interested in earning a graduate certificate in homeland defense from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will soon be able to learn without leaving home or office.
Beginning April 24, the Network Information and Space Security Center at UCCS will offer an on-line version of a graduate certificate program in homeland defense. The on-line version is derived from a resident program offered since Aug. 2003 to military officers and civilians working at U.S. Northern Command and others interested in learning about homeland security and homeland defense.
Registration begins March 17 for the new, on-line version.
“We recognize that not everyone can alter his or her schedule to attend traditional courses offered on campus,” Bill Ayen, director, NISSC, said. “To that end, with the assistance of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, we will provide on-line instruction that will allow students from throughout Colorado and the nation to receive education in a format that fits their schedules.
In Dec. 2004, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education awarded an Extended Studies Development grant to the university to create the on-line courses.
Designed to develop leaders in industry and government, the certificate courses train students to develop homeland security and homeland defense strategies for their own organizations and manage relationships with the many diverse organizations working in the field. As employment in homeland security and homeland defense expands, certificate holders will be well-positioned to serve as administrators, executives, analysts, and consultants.
The courses may be used to fulfill requirements of the Master of Public Administration degree or as electives in selected other online and on-campus UCCS graduate programs.
