COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado will grant the Chancellor’s Leadership Class (CLC), a highly selective honors program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, $10,000 to provide scholarships for CLC Scholars for the 2004-2005 academic year.
The gift is a challenge grant and will be used to encourage additional gifts.
CLC is a four-year leadership development program that engages students in meaningful community service, facilitates interaction with community leaders, and builds leadership skills. The students must also take courses from the leadership studies curriculum. Each student receives a $3,500 annual scholarship. This fall there will be 43 students in the class.
CLC is a member of the Colorado Leadership Alliance (CLA), a partnership between El Pomar Foundation and six university leadership programs in Colorado.
The CU Foundation, an independent non-profit organization that serves as the official fundraising and fund management organization for CU, will administer the grant.
“I want to acknowledge and thank the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado for their grant in support of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class,” Chancellor Pam Shockley said. “This gift will be used to develop the next generation of competent, confident, and civic-minded community leaders.”
The Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado has awarded more than $12 million to Colorado nonprofits since Tim Gill, founder and former chairman and chief technology officer of Quark, Inc., and chairman of the Gill Foundation, started it in 1996. To date, the Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado has been comprised solely of contributions from the Gill Foundation, a Colorado-based philanthropic organization.
The Gay & Lesbian Fund for Colorado provides support for community programs in six areas: arts and culture; children, youth and families; civic participation; leadership development; social justice; and public broadcasting.
CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls more than 7,600 students annually.
