COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs named three finalists for director of intercollegiate athletics today.
CU-Colorado Springs is conducting a nationwide search to replace Randy Cubero, who will remain at the university but plans to leave his position as athletic director after four years in the position. Rogers Redding, vice chancellor, Academic Affairs, chairs a search committee of faculty, staff and students. Cubero will remain athletic director until a replacement is selected and will assist with transition.
The athletic director is the senior leader of the CU-Colorado Springs Mountain Lion Athletic Department. The campus fields twelve men’s and women’s teams and competes in NCAA Division II.
The finalists in order of their visits to campus are:
-Stephen Kirkham, women’s head basketball coach, Mesa State College, Grand Junction, since 1988. He also served as assistant athletic director, basketball camp co-director and instructor of physical education at the college. Previously, he was head women’s basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Butler County (Kan.) Community College, and a high school coach in Kansas and Oklahoma. Kirkham earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a master’s from Fort Hays (Kan.) State University. Kirkham will meet with faculty, staff and community members during campus visits March 29 and 30.
-Jim Trego, associate director of athletics, Baylor University, Waco, Texas, since 1993. He previously was assistant director of athletics, United States Air Force Academy, and an assistant professor and coach at the USAFA. He was an active duty member of the Air Force and retired in 1993 with the rank of major. Trego earned a bachelor’s degree from South Dakota State University and a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Trego will meet with faculty, staff and community members April 5-6.
-Matt Bassett, senior associate director of intercollegiate athletics, State University of New York at Binghamton since 1999. Previously, he was associate director of intercollegiate athletics at SUNY-Binghamton, assistant director of student services at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, Conn., assistant athletic director and head men’s basketball coach at Green Mountain College, Poultney, Vermont, and assistant men’s basketball coach, Syracuse University. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College, New York, a master’s from Syracuse University and a master’s from University at Albany (N.Y.) Bassett will meet with faculty, staff and community members April 22-23.
CU-Colorado Springs, located on Austin Bluffs Parkway in northeast Colorado Springs, is the fastest growing university in Colorado and one of the fastest growing universities in the nation. The university offers 25 bachelor’s degrees, 17 master’s and two doctoral degrees. The campus enrolls more than 7,600 students annually.
