COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO — Four students attending the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs have been awarded prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarships.
The four students are:
Reyna Gutierrez, Gallup High School, Gallup, NM
Ariane Morgan, American High School, Hanau, Germany; Colorado Springs
Rosaura Padilla, Manzanola Junior/Senior High School, Manzanola, CO
Truc Truong, Nguyen Thuong Hien (Vietnam High School); Colorado Springs
“I am delighted that these highly qualified students have each been awarded a Gates Millennium Scholarship. The scholarship will help them achieve a quality education at CU-Colorado Springs. The Gates scholarship is a fitting recognition of the hard work of these four talented students,” said Pam Shockley-Zalabak, chancellor, CU-Colorado Springs.
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program awards scholarships to high-achieving minority students and provides funding for tuition, fees and books for each academic year and continuing through the doctoral level of education.
The GMS program, launched in September 1999 with a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is designed to reduce financial barriers and increase the number of African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the administrator of the GMS program. To reach, coordinate, and support the constituent groups, UNCF has partnered with the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Organization of Chinese Americans.
