Media Advisory: Nonprofit group to donate police protective gear to UCCS

shield-package-1-300x300WHO:   Shield 616, a local nonprofit group dedicated to supporting law enforcement by providing additional safety gear designed to protect officers from rifle shots in an active shooter situation.

WHAT: Ceremony to present UCCS police officers with gear designed to protect them from high-powered rifle shots. The gear includes a specialized vest, helmet and optics designed to help officers see an active shooter. Jake Skifstad, president and founder of Shield 616, will make brief remarks about the donation and introduce individual donors to the project and demonstrate how the gear is used. Other guests include local law enforcement officials and UCCS leaders.

WHY:    Shield 616 seeks to provide additional protection for local police and sheriff’s officers in addition to connecting individual donors with police officers. Through its efforts, the organization has donated 175 tactical gear kits designed to protect officers from rifle fire. The kits cost about $1,000 each. There are approximately 1,500 law enforcement officers in El Paso County.
